About Bachelor or Grados

Once completed secondary school, admission to undergraduate programs in Spain depends on the international agreements. Students that have finished secondary education in European Union countries and Andorra, China, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, and met the requirements to enrol in university only need to ask for the credentials to access university studies in Spain. Students from other countries have to apply to the Spanish Ministry of Education for the recognition of their secondary school.

Some Spanish universities require an entrance examination and a language test (there are programs in Spanish, English and other languages).

The bachelor’s degree is called a ‘grado’ in Spain. To obtain most bachelor’s degrees in Spain, students must earn a total of 240 ECTS credits, but some degrees requires 300 or 360 ECTS. ECTS is the ‘European Credit Transfer System’ which is a standard adopted by all universities in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).  A full time student is expected to obtain 60 credits in an academic year (so, 240 ECTS require 4 years).

Master and PhD

Students with a Bachelor’s degree have several options to continue their education in Spain. There are official programs, adapted to European Higher Education Area with full official recognition, and postgraduate programs approved and awarded by each university.

The Master programmes take one or two years and requires between 60 and 120 ECTS.

There are Masters oriented towards research, academic or professional activity.

A minimum of 300 credits for undergraduate and graduate studies and an official Master are necessary to take part of a doctorate program. The PhD degree requires at least two years of research and a doctoral thesis to be defended and evaluated by a tribunal composed of 5 doctors.

Let us know your specific interests and CIRI will support you to choose the best option to pursue postgraduate studies in Spain.
