MONASTERY OF EL ESCORIAL

The Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial – designated as World Heritage by the Unesco – was built between 1563-1584 in the purest 16th century Renaissance style. Close by, at the Panteón Real, all Bourbon kings and queens have been buried there for centuries. It is a Royal Palace, a monastery, a school and houses the private library of its mentor King Philip II which contains over 40,000 books, some among the oldest in the world.
